Hooked Fibre Art Workshop for Kids Hooked fibre art is a very tactile means of creative expression for kids. The technique uses only one “stitch”, so it is very easy for kids to master in a short amount of time. Hooked fibre art is fun for kids while also further developing their patience and concentration skills, as well as exposing them to an art form that they may not be familiar with. In this hooked fibre workshop, kids will be given a brief introduction to fibre art in general, as well as the specific technique of rug hooking. The kids will then participate in a hands-on experience making their own hooked fibre artwork which they can then take home with them. All materials are included. Children will have use of a studio hook and hoop for the duration of the class. I offer the 2.5 hour workshops in my home studio. Shorter versions of the workshop are ideal for Brownie, Girl Guide and Scout groups, school classrooms and Birthday parties.

Nature and Landscapes In this full-day class, we will be hooking with yarn. Students will bring with them a selection of photos that they have taken in nature. These photos can be anything from landscapes, close-ups, architecture or abstract designs. Using these photos, you will learn to look at nature differently, in order to find inspiration for your rug designs in unexpected places. We will go through the entire design process in-depth: from finding and editing a composition, getting your design on backing, basic rules of art, colour planning, values, shading and shadowing, choosing the best yarns to work with, and ideas for finishing your piece. Students will bring apply what they have learned to their own 5 x 7 inch piece that will be based on one of the photos that they brought with them. Previous experience in hooking with yarn is not necessary.

Hooking Portraits in Yarn  Yarn is a great medium to use for hooking portraits, as it allows you to capture a lot of detail in a small space. In this class you will learn everything that you need to know about hooking portraits with yarn: from choosing a portrait to hook, composition, getting your portrait design on backing, capturing personality, hooking facial features, skin tones, and more. Students will bring a selection of portrait photos that they have taken, and will choose one with assistance from the instructor. Students will translate their photo into an 11” x 14” project that they will work on throughout the class.

Painting and Hooking in Yarn Working from your own photos (or your imagination!) you will design and create a 5” x 7” piece that combines various types of paint with yarn rug hooking. The piece that you create can be abstract, realistic or a combination of both. This class emphasizes play and experimentation, and most of all having fun while you let your creativity soar! Topics covered in this class will include the basic rules of art, colour planning, values, shading and shadowing, the possibilities and limitations of each medium, and tips and tricks for hooking with yarn.
